HSR U-Pass

 HSR Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) 

All full-time students at Mohawk College receive a 4-month unlimited bus pass for the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) for each semester they are enrolled. This pass allows you to ride the HSR anywhere, anytime throughout the city.

 

As of April 2019, your HSR U-Pass will be managed using a PRESTO card, instead of a sticker on your ONEcard. 

Once you have selected your timetable, you can pick up your PRESTO card at the following locations at your campus:

Fennell Campus:

  • MSA Office (Room G109)

  • Heath Study Lounge (Room G010)

  • I-Wing Rotunda (Beside ONE Card Office) 

Stoney Creek Campus:

  • MSA Office (Room A125)

IAHS Campus:

  • The Square (Room 121)

  • MSA Office (Room 112)

 

When you pick up your PRESTO card, you will also receive a bi-fold card holder for your PRESTO card and Mohawk Student ID. Your Student ID must be presented in order to board the HSR transit system using your PRESTO card. Do not punch holes in your PRESTO card as the card will no longer work and you will be responsible for the cost of a new card.

Activating your PRESTO Card

 

Once you have been issued a PRESTO card, you can load your HSR U-Pass online.

 

STEP 1:

Log into your ONEcard account at onecard.mohawkcollege.ca using your Mohawk ID and password. Click on the User Defined Fields tab to retrieve your HSR U-Pass voucher code. You will receive a new voucher code for each 4-month period that you are enrolled as a full-time student, however you will need to keep the same physical PRESTO card.

STEP 2:

Go to www.PRESTOcard.ca to create or login into “My PRESTO Account” and redeem your voucher code. Follow the video tutorial below for step-by-step instructions on how to activate your HSR U-Pass. You do not need to load money onto your PRESTO card for trips on the HSR. Once you redeem the voucher you need to wait 24 hours to use the pass. 

 

Please take note of the dates that your HSR U-Pass is valid for each 4-month period. You can redeem your voucher code before your HSR U-Pass becomes valid. Remember to redeem your voucher before you plan to start using your PRESTO card, because you will need to wait 24 hours before it is active.

 

Valid HSR U-Pass dates for each semester are:

  • Spring Semester: May 1 – August 31

  • Fall Semester: September 1 – December 31

  • Winter Semester: January 1 – April 30

STEP 3:

You can begin using your PRESTO card beginning on the date that your HSR U-Pass becomes valid  (May 1 for Spring Semester – if you card has been activated 24 hours or more). Using your PRESTO card before these dates will result in a fare being charged to your account. Tap your PRESTO card on the device located inside the front door of any HSR bus and show your Mohawk Student ID to the bus operator. You must do this within 45 days of redeeming your voucher code.

How To Activate Your Presto Card

 IMPORTANT NOTES: 

  • Once redeemed, the voucher will take 24 hours to be processed and activated.

 

  • You must tap your PRESTO card on an HSR bus within 45 days of redeeming your voucher in order for your card to remain active. If you fail to tap your PRESTO card within 45 days you will need to contact PRESTO to have your voucher reactivated.

 

  • The HSR U-Pass is non-transferable. Misuse will result in card confiscation.

 

  • Do not use the PRESTO card until the date that your HSR U-Pass becomes valid. If you tap your card before your HSR U-Pass becomes valid, a bus fare will be applied, resulting in a negative balance. Valid HSR U-Pass dates for each
    semester are:

    • Spring Semester: May 1 – August 31

    • Fall Semester: September 1 – December 31

    • Winter Semester: January 1 – April 30

 

  • You will be issued a new voucher code for each 4-month period that you are enrolled as a full-time student. However, you will use the same physical PRESTO card and will not be issued a new free card in the event that the first one is lost or stolen. You can purchase a replacement PRESTO card for $6.00 plus a minimum of $10.00 loaded.

 Frequently Asked Questions 

Is there a grace period?

There is no grace period. After you have picked up your PRESTO card, you can access your voucher code at onecard.mohawkcollege.ca and load it onto your account. If you have a current HSR Bus Pass sticker on your ONEcard for the Winter 2019 Semester, that sticker remains valid until April 30, 2019.

 

Remember that your voucher will take 24 hours to activate, and that you must use your PRESTO within 45 days of activation in order for it to function.

Where and when do eligible students pick up their PRESTO card?

 

Once you have selected your timetable, eligible students can pick up their free PRESTO card during business hours at the ONEcard location at your campus:

  • Fennell Campus:

    • ONEcard Office (i130)

    • MSA Office (Room G109)

  • Stoney Creek Campus:

    • Campus Store (A124)

    • MSA Office (Room A125)​

  • IAHS Campus:

    • The Square (Room 121)

    • MSA Office (Room 112)

You will need to present your valid Mohawk Student ID in order to pick up your PRESTO card. At the time of pick-up, you will also receive a bi-fold card holder for your PRESTO card and Student ID. Do not punch a hole in your card as it will no longer work and you will be responsible for the cost of a replacement card.​

How does the HSR Bus Pass PRESTO card work?

On every bus trip, tap your HSR U-Pass PRESTO card on the device located inside the front door of the bus and show your Mohawk Student ID card. The system recognizes that you are travelling with a valid HSR U-Pass and does not deduct a bus fare for trips on HSR.

 

When riding on other transit systems, the system will calculate the correct fare for your trip, and deduct the fare from the balance on your card if you have loaded funds available. If you travel on transit systems other than the HSR, it is recommended that you load additional funds to cover those trips. You can load your card online at www.PRESTOcard.ca

What if I already have a PRESTO card?

You may use any PRESTO card that is registered in your name to redeem your HSR U-Pass voucher code. Students are encouraged to pick up and use the free PRESTO card issued by the ONEcard Office if you do not already have a PRESTO card.

 

When you pick up your free PRESTO card, you will be provided with a bi-fold card holder for your HSR U-Pass and Mohawk Student ID. If you already have a PRESTO card, you can also pick up a sticker to place on your HSR U-Pass PRESTO card to help distinguish it from your existing one. 

 

If you use the free blank PRESTO card for your HSR U-Pass, it is recommended that you do not load large amounts of money onto your existing card prior to receiving your new PRESTO card.

How do I register my PRESTO card to load the voucher code?

The HSR U-Pass can only be loaded via voucher onto a registered PRESTO card, which requires a “My PRESTO Account”. This allows your card to be replaced if lost or stolen and the HSR U-Pass and/or cash balance on the PRESTO card will be restored.

STEP 1:

After you have selected your timetable and picked up your PRESTO card, go to www.PRESTOcard.ca and click “Create a new My PRESTO Account” and enter your personal information to complete your account profile.

STEP 2:

Once you have created your account, you can register your card by clicking the “Add an Existing Card” option. Please note that if you already have an account, you may add a new card to your current account by clicking “Add an Existing Card” under the “Manage” menu. You can also load the voucher code onto an existing PRESTO card registered under your name, if you wish. 

What happens if I lose my PRESTO card?

To report a lost, stolen or damaged card, you should contact PRESTO immediately by calling 1-877-378-6123 or by logging into your PRESTO account and cancelling the card.

To replace a lost, stolen or damaged card, visit the designated location at your campus to purchase a replacement:

  • Fennell Campus: MSA Office, G109

  • Stoney Creek Campus: MSA Office, A125

  • IAHS Campus: Compass Information Centre (located on the main floor of the McMaster University Student Centre)

The fee for a replacement card is $6.00 plus a minimum $10.00 loaded onto the card.

 

Do not register your new PRESTO card online or add a transit pass. Once you have your replacement card, follow these steps:

 

STEP 1:

Log in to your account at www.PRESTOcard.ca and click on “Manage” and then “Report Lost Card”.

STEP 2:

Select the lost or stolen card to block and transfer the balance/account details

 

STEP 3:

Under “Transfer the balance of my lost/stolen/damaged care to” select "a new card purchased". Click "Next" and follow the prompts.

STEP 4:

Wait 24 hours, and then tap your PRESTO card on a device to complete the transfer process.

Caring for your PRESTO card

Each PRESTO card has an internal chip and antenna throughout the inside of the card. PRESTO cards CANNOT be punched or cut in any way, otherwise the card will no longer function properly. Students are responsible for the cost to replace damaged cards. You are also responsible for ensuring that your PRESTO card is not damaged through misuse, bending, or cracking which may cause the card to stop working. To replace a damaged card, visit the designated location at your campus to purchase a replacement:

  • Fennell Campus: MSA Office, G109

  • Stoney Creek Campus: MSA Office, A125

  • IAHS Campus: Compass Information Centre (located on the main floor of the McMaster University Student Centre)

What if my PRESTO card is defective?

A card may be defective if it is not recognized by the PRESTO system when tapped, even it if looks normal. In the event of a defective card, visit the designated location at your campus to receive free a replacement:

  • Fennell Campus: MSA Office, G109

  • Stoney Creek Campus: MSA Office, A125

  • IAHS Campus: Compass Information Centre (located on the main floor of the McMaster University Student Centre)

 

There is no fee for a replacement if your card is determined to be defective and unable to be read. Students are responsible for keeping their cards safe and are responsible to pay for any cards that are worn and/or broken. If a card is found to be defective, the student should immediately load funds onto their replacement card for use on that day, as it will take 24 hours for their HSR U-Pass to become active on the new PRESTO card. 

The defective card will be retained by the MSA Office. Once you have a replacement card, you can transfer your account details and/or cash balance to the new card by logging into your account at www.PRESTOcard.ca. It will take 24 hours to activate.

Which students are eligible for the HSR U-Pass?

Full-time students will have access to the HSR U-Pass for each 4-month period during which they are enrolled. Students taking a reduced course load as an academic accommodation can buy into the HSR U-Pass program.

Which students are NOT eligible for the HSR U-Pass?

  • Part-time students

  • Continuing Education students

  • Apprenticeship students

  • Co-op students who have not been placed

Can I opt in to the HSR U-Pass if I am not a full-time student?

Only some students who are not enrolled full-time are able to buy into the program:

  • Students who are on co-op and have been placed may buy into the program

  • Students in a program whose semester extends past the typical semester end dates (December 31, April 30, and August 31) and can buy into the program for the next semester

Where will I see the HSR charge on my MyMohawk account?

To review the charge, log into your My Mohawk account and go to Finance > Account Summary.

What if I am not in the HSR file?

If you are not in the HSR Student PRESTO Card distribution file, you should first determine if you are eligible based on the criteria listed above. If you believe that you are eligible, check your MyMohawk account to ensure you have been assessed for the HSR U-Pass fee.

Can I use my PRESTO Card on DARTS?

Unfortunately DARTS does not currently accept PRESTO Cards.  However, you will still be provided with your bus pass in the event you ever ride an HSR bus.

 

Please contact the MSA Office at msareception@mohawkcollege.ca and provide the following information:

  • Your PRESTO Card #, your name and student number

 

We will then pass that information along to the HSR, who will ensure that they add it to their DARTS file so that you experience no difficulty when booking or riding DARTS.

Can I link my PRESTO card to my OneCard?

No, it is not possible.

Will the PRESTO card work with transit systems other than HSR?

Yes, your PRESTO card can be used on any of the 11 participating transit agencies in Ontario. Your bus pass is only free for HSR service.

 

If you would like to use your PRESTO card on other participating transit agencies, you must load money onto your PRESTO card.

Where do I get my voucher code?

STEP 1:

Log into your ONEcard account at onecard.mohawkcollege.ca using your Mohawk ID and password.

STEP 2:

Click on the “User Defined Fields” tab to retrieve your HSR U-Pass voucher code.

 

You will receive a new voucher code for each 4-month period that you are enrolled as a full-time student, however you will need to keep the same physical PRESTO card.
