Waste Reduction At Mohawk College
Reducing waste on campus helps us lower our environmental impact. Benefits include a smaller carbon footprint, less plastic pollution, less waste sent to landfill, cost savings and less use of natural resources.
Waste is also one of the more visible dimensions of sustainability, making it a major concern to students, employees and the community.
Key Initiatives
Single Use Plastics Policy banning the sale of plastic bags and most bottled water. The policy has resulted in the elimination of more than 500,000 single-use plastic bags from campus.
Forty-seven water bottle refilling stations across three campuses. Through refills at these stations, Mohawk students and employees have eliminated more than seven million single-use water bottles.
Centralized waste sorting stations at Fennell and Stoney Creek campuses. The stations provide organics (composting) bins and rinsing stations to help reduce contamination in the recycling streams.
Replacing of foodservice packaging with more recyclable and compostable materials. In partnership with foodservice provider Chartwells, packaging improvements allow more cafeteria waste to be diverted from landfill. Did you know… ‘Biodegradable’ is an unregulated term, while ‘compostable’ products actually have to become a soil amendment.
TerraCycle boxes for recycling single-use masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plastic materials from the masks are repurposed into new goods such as outdoor deck boards and furniture. Did you know… Single-use masks are made of polypropylene, a non-biodegradable plastic that stays in our natural environment if not recycled.
