Student Spotlight: Meet Mohawk’s Graphic Design Students

Mohawk College offers a slew of programs in many different themes - one of which being Communication Arts. And, one of the programs found within this theme is Graphic Design.

Throughout this three-year program, students can develop, and hone, their skills in one of the most advanced digital print learning centres in Canada.

The MSA recently sat down with three third-year Graphic Design students to discuss what sparked their interest in the program, their favourite type of software, and how they’re preparing for the transition from school into the workforce.

Here’s what they had to say.

What sparked your interest in the Graphic Design program?

Bullard’s interest in Mohawk’s Graphic program was sparked by both the diversity of the program and the industry.

What is your favourite type of software to use?

“I love using all the software that is required for design! Each program is designed for a specific task that you need to complete, which could be logos, posters, booklets, etc.”

“However, if I had to pick one I would choose Adobe Photoshop! I think I like it so much because it has a lot of capabilities when it comes to drawing and painting digitally. It is also amazing to discover how far you can push photo editing to make it look realistic. Photoshop was also the first design program I learned how to use, so it has a special place in my heart.”

How are you preparing yourself for the transition from school to work?

Currently, Bullard is preparing herself for the workforce by taking on small client jobs through friends and family, along with people who have reached out to her through social media or professors. She is also working with CESP – Canada Education Savings Programs.

Dan Ventresca

What sparked your interest in the Graphic Design program?

Ventresca’s interest in the program was sparked in a few different ways – first, he took a Computer Technology class in high school that consisted of lots of photography and photoshop, he also realized he could pursue Graphic Design as a career, and he could use his creativity in a demanding industry.

What is your favourite type of software to use?

When this question was proposed, Ventresca gave two answers – Illustrator and Photoshop.

How are you preparing yourself for the transition from school to work?

Ventresca is preparing himself for the workforce by getting as much experience as possible, through internships, freelancing, and adding to his portfolio.

Danielle Eshuis

What sparked your interest in the Graphic Design program?

Like Ventresca, Eshuis’ interest in the program was sparked in a few different ways. She was always interested in art growing up, however, when she was in Grade 9 a graphic designer had a career day at her high school which furthered her interest. She then got more exposure to students in the Graphic Design program, attended the college’s open house and was sold.

What is your favourite type of software to use?

Eshuis said her favourite type of software to use is Illustrator because of all the things that can be done with it.

How are you preparing yourself for the transition from school to work?

Eshuis is preparing for the workforce by working at the MSA as a Student Graphic Designer for experience, building her portfolio, freelancing, and practicing art – in many different mediums - in her free time to get better.

If you’re thinking of applying or are already enrolled in Mohawk’s Graphic Design program, you may be starting to prepare for the workforce. One of the many ways the MSA can help you is through the Career Closet – a free service where students can pick out two outfits to keep and use in the future! Check out the Career Closet today!
