Different Ways to Spend Your Winter Break if You Don't Have Plans

Woohoo! You've finished the Fall 2020 semester at Mohawk College. Now you can sit back, relax and...... and what? With both the cold weather and COVID-19 affecting so much of our normal lives, many of you might be wondering 'what can I do with my break?' Seeing friends and family might be limited but it doesn't mean you can't still have some fun during your time off.

Set up a Netflix movie night with friends or family

Grab some popcorn and cozy up for a holiday movie.

The days of getting together to go to the movies might seem like a distance memory, but it doesn't mean you can't still (virtually) get together for a movie night. Google Chrome extensions like Netflix Party or Disney Plus's Groupwatch allow for virtual movie nights no matter where you are. If you're in the holiday spirit or just want to kick back and watch a classic, this is the perfect way to feel like you are all together.

Learn how to download the Netflix Party extension.

Virtual board game night

Different games, such as Monopoly, are available online.

Need to spark that competitive side while social distancing? Set up a virtual board game night with some friends. You can either find an online board game, or set up a physical one where you move everyone's pieces for them. Just make sure you have a good camera to point at the board and everyone knows the rules before hand. Oh, and no taking extra Monopoly money for yourself (everyone will be watching closely).

Bake some holiday treats

Cookies? Pies? Cakes? Any sweet treat will do!

Making some tasty treats is great way to spend your break after finishing your Mohawk College exams! We don't judge on what you bake either. Want some cookies? How about some muffins? We can even throw in there a festive lasagna if you feel so incline. The choice is yours!

Cozy up with a book and a blanket

Nothing is better on a cold winter day than a good book

Getting cozy is almost a must for this time of year, and getting a good book out to read over the break goes hand in hand with keeping cozy. Look online for some new reads or break out a old classic from your shelf, the choice is yours. You can even get some friends or family involved and set up a virtual holiday book club. Set up Zoom meetings every couple of days and discuss what you loved and disliked about each couple of chapters.

Go out for a winter hike

Make sure to dress warmly when heading outside.

Getting outside and doing it safely with COVID-19 is still very important, but winter hikes are the perfect way to do that. (Hopefully) Snow covered trails are a great way to get some exercise, and even take some amazing pictures that showcase some trails in whatever area you live in. If you take any hikes over the winter break, make sure you tag @msamohawk for any great photos you took while exploring the outdoors.

Build a fort (snow pending)

Building the perfect snow fort isn't easy.

Building a snow fort brings everyone back to those childhood days of nighttime setting in at 6 p.m., but you and your friends are still outside perfecting your snowy palace. If the snow doesn't stay on the ground for you, bring those fort ideas inside. Get some chairs, blankets, pillows and anything else you need to construct the ultimate fort.

There are so many ways you can safely enjoy your break and relax over the holidays even with a pandemic. Just remember to keep following health guidelines! Stay safe, Mohawk.
