an update on the summer hsr bus pass
The Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) is pleased to announce that we have received approval from the City of Hamilton to suspend the summer HSR bus pass program for all Mohawk College students. Every student who paid the Transit fee for the summer HSR bus pass program will receive a credit on your Mohawk College student financial account.
The MSA would like to thank our students for your patience during the last two months while we were finalizing details with the City of Hamilton.

a message from your msa president re: black lives matter
Hello Mohawk Students,
I want to take a minute to discuss a serious issue that is going on right now in the United States and across the world. Some of the contents of this might be hard to read. On May 25th, George Floyd was killed by police, after an officer pinned him to the ground and pressed his knee against his neck for just under 9 minutes. This has brought systemic racism, racial injustice and police brutality back to the forefront in the United States and the world. Protests have erupted in the USA, Canada and the world for Black Lives Matter, and the systemic racism that exists within society.
We need to remember that Canada is not sheltered from systemic racism. According to a 2015 Statistics Canada report, only three per cent of adults in Canada are Indigenous, yet they represent between 20 and 24 percent of adult inmates in Canada's jails and prisons. It goes further than that, as the former RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson has publicly acknowledged the existence of racial bias in Canadian policing. This is unacceptable.
When one person's rights are being infringed upon, all of our rights are being infringed upon. We need to stand up, and continue to fight for human rights, and a society without racism. United, we ALL can break down the walls of systemic racism, and create real change, so that People of Colour do not have to live in fear from society. We need to accept our privilege, and stop telling people how to fix the problem, instead, listen, understand and think.
I encourage everyone to continue making your voices heard both in and outside of your own lives. I also encourage everyone to continue educating yourself and to continue engaging with what is going on around you.
The last thing I want to remind people is that in times like these, they can bring great emotional trauma to people. The MSA has supports available, such as Empower me, which is a free online counselling service that’s available for eligible students to use 24/7. Mohawk College and the MSA have multiple online services available to support students and their needs. We want students to know that we are here for you. You can view all services and learn how to access them on the Mohawk College website.

Past due equipment loans borrowed from the MSA can be retuned when the campus is open to students again.
Service Staff :
MSA services staff is still accessible via email (email@example.com) or phone messages (905)575-2393. Students can leave a message and a MSA Services Team member will return the call.
The MSA Board is active and available to address questions/concerns and help students navigate their college experience. Students can reach board members via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone messages (905)575-2393. Please note to specify that the inquiry is addressed towards the MSA Student Board. The message will be directed to the appropriate board member and they will reach out as soon as they can.

To my fellow Mohawk students,
This morning the Ontario government declared a state of emergency for the province, related to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the MSA, we have been encouraging as many employees as possible to work remotely. Some on-site services such as the Career Closet and equipment loans are suspended until further notice, to reinforce the idea to avoid unnecessary contact with people. Grad photos are also suspended, but will be rescheduled at a later date.
You might be sick of hearing the same things:
Wash your hands frequently (for 20 seconds or longer each time)
Don’t touch your face
Distance yourselves socially
You keep seeing these messages everywhere because they work. A lot of us have a friend or loved one with a compromised immune system, or are in a circumstance that otherwise puts them at risk. If you are not worried for your own health, please remember that this outbreak looks a lot different for different people. Out of respect for your own health and those around you, please follow best practices as outlined by Health Canada. Do your part to help Canada ‘flatten the curve’.
Even if you’re not at any of our campuses, the MSA is still here to support you. We will communicate the best information we have available in a rapidly evolving situation. Your health and dental plan is still in effect, and all legal counselling services that can be done remotely will continue to be available.
