So, you started at Mohawk College a few weeks ago and are really enjoying your virtual classes so far. But something is missing. You’re looking for a way to get more involved with the college and the Mohawk community … the MSA has just what you may be looking for.

Let us tell you about the MSA student representative committees.

If you saw our last blog post about student rep committees, you may already know what these committees are all about. But just in case you missed it, we’ll do a quick recap.

What are Student Representative Committees?

MSA student rep committees are made up of dedicated Mohawk students. The committees (virtually) meet to talk about different opportunities, relevant to the committee, pertaining to the different Mohawk College campuses.

The 2020/2021 MSA student rep committees are as follows: Student Spaces, Events and Activities, Student Services and Supports, Academic Support, and Post-COVID College Life. While being part of any of these committees has countless benefits, in this blog post we are going to discuss six of them.

Here are six specific ways you can benefit from MSA student rep committees.

You Will Help Make Mohawk an Overall Better Place

Regardless of which committee you are involved with, you will be helping to make Mohawk College (regardless of which campus you’re at) a better place by acting as a voice for students.

MSA student rep committees provide students with excellent opportunities to use their voice.

You Will be Active and Involved on Campus

Being active and involved on campus has posed some challenges this school year.

Due to COVID-19, the MSA has had to alter some of its offerings (i.e. events are now held virtually) to ensure the health and safety of Mohawk students. While this may make it seem impossible to be active and involved on campus, the student rep committees have been structured in a socially distant safe way while maintaining their purpose and effectiveness.

You Will Participate in On-Campus Democracy

As noted with the first benefit, being involved with student rep committees will allow you to be a voice for Mohawk students.

With that comes the chance to participate in on-campus democracy. You will use your voice to tackle issues/concerns raised by other students, and issues/concerns within the Hamilton community that impact Mohawk students, etc.

It Will Help Build and Improve Your Leadership Skills

Integrity, dependability, problem-solving, and relationship/team building are just a few of the leadership skills you will develop and hone while being involved with a student representative committee.

It Will Help Build Your Professional Portfolio

This will probably not come to you as a surprise, but employers are constantly looking to hire people who have other interests outside of work and who are involved in their community (whether that be the Mohawk College community or the geographical community in which they live).

Being part of a student rep committee will look great on your resume.

Joining a student-focused committee will show employers you’re motivated, driven, and enthusiastic.

It Will Help Bring Value to the Things You are Most Passionate About

One of the arguably most important benefits of joining a student representative committee is that you will be able to bring value and spend time on topics/areas you are passionate about. Sometimes, college can be tough and you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the (virtual) classroom. There’s no better way to achieve this than by putting some time into other areas you’re interested in.
