Happy National Popcorn Day: 10 Great Popcorn Toppings

Did you know that Jan. 19, 2021, is National Popcorn Day? A day dedicated to celebrating and eating the crunchy, delicious snack movie watchers love regardless of how good the movie is. The treat dates back to the 16th Century when the Aztecs used popcorn in headdresses worn during ceremonies honouring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility. Since then, people worldwide have discovered how good popcorn can be and how many different flavours the snack can come in. Here are ten great toppings Mohawk College students can add to their popcorn bowl.

Dill Pickle

Jars with pickles in them.

We are talking about the flavouring here, not the actual pickle. But you can try that too.

Nothing screams a good salty snack like a dill pickle. In fact, there aren’t too many crunchy treats that don’t go with the classic seasoning. Grabbing some of this and sprinkling it all over your popcorn is sure to bring you to flavour town.

Butter + Salt

The classic toppings are simple, but tasty.

The all-time winner on movie nights. Butter and salt go together with popcorn any time, anywhere – you don’t have to be watching a movie. Never mess with a classic.

Chocolate covered popcorn.

Is there anything that chocolate can’t make better?

Chocolate

When you think about what goes well with popcorn chocolate may not be at the top of your list, but it’s a fantastic option. Some like to drop a few pieces into the bowl or bag and let it melt with the popcorn, while others like to heat some and drizzle it all over the freshly popped corn.

Caramel

Caramel popcorn in a bag.

That shell that the caramel forms really gives an extra crunch.

Want to add some extra crunch to each handful of popcorn? Add a little caramel and let it dry. Just be prepared to get out your floss and toothbrush right after, as the caramel often sticks in your teeth longer than it should.

Jalapeño Jack

Jalapeño peppers piled up on top of each other.

Add some spice.

For those of you who want a little kick to your popcorn, there are plenty of options. Here’s one. Jalapeno Jack tickles those tastebuds with a spicy flavour that might have your mouth a bit numb after diving into a few handfuls. Don’t worry, though; you can always turn down the heat by adding an extra flavour that’s sweet to help curb the spice.

Cheese

Different flavoured popcorn bags.

Cheese, chilli fakes … so many topping options.

Does cheese go with everything? Without overthinking, the answer is yes. The only question left to ask is what kind of cheese you should choose? Are you a white or orange cheddar person? Parmesan?

The choice is yours!

Chilli Flakes

Think the Jalapeno Jack flavour is too tame? Crank it up to 11 and add some chilli flakes to your popcorn.

It’s sure to please those spicy food lovers in your life, but maybe have a glass of water or two on hand.

There you have it, our recommendations for some fantastic popcorn toppings. Is there anything we missed? Let us know on Instagram (@MSAMohawk), and make sure to tag us in a photo if you try any of these suggestions.
